Total Elbow Replacement Procedure in Houston, TX

Before the procedure, we will assess your medical history and provide instructions to prepare for the surgery. This surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia. Our orthopedic surgeon will make an incision at the back of the elbow and gently move the muscles aside to reveal the bones.

We will prepare the upper arm bone (humerus) to fit a metallic piece. The same preparation will be done for the forearm bone (ulna). These replacement stems are kept in place with bone cement and connected at the elbow by a hinge pin. This type is called ‘linked’ elbow replacement.

Another type, known as the ‘non-linked’ elbow replacement, uses the patient’s own ligaments and tissues to support the replacement stems. This surgery is only suitable for certain cases without ligament injuries.

Recovery After Surgery

Our team will provide complete after-care instructions to help you recover well after the surgery. We will prescribe medications for pain management. As the healing process takes place, we will also introduce rehabilitation exercises to improve the functioning of your joint.

You will do gentle exercises on a routine basis that will help reduce swelling around the elbow joint and prevent stiffness. Follow the instructions mentioned by our orthopedists to achieve a proper recovery. Complete healing may take 4 to 6 weeks.
