Difference Between A Standard and Reverse Shoulder Replacement

As the name suggests, this procedure is the reverse of the standard shoulder replacement surgery. In the standard procedure, the metal ball is fixed to the humerus, and the plastic cup is connected to the shoulder blade. However, this may not be beneficial for those who have developed complex shoulder arthritis with large rotator cuff tears.

These patients can benefit from reverse shoulder replacement surgery in which the ball and socket are switched. We fix the metal ball to the socket and attach the plastic cup to the upper end of the humerus. You will be able to move your arms much more comfortably after this surgery.

Questions About Reverse Shoulder Replacement?

Candidates for Reverse Shoulder Replacement

Our Houston, TX, team may recommend reverse shoulder replacement if you have:

  • Cuff tear arthropathy
  • A completely torn rotator cuff
  • Severe shoulder pain or discomfort
  • Complex fracture of the shoulder joint

  • Tumor of the shoulder joint

It is important to note that surgical options are reserved for patients with severe shoulder damage or those who cannot benefit from conservative measures. Our orthopedic surgeon will evaluate your medical history, symptoms, and scans to finalize the treatment plan.

Recovery After Surgery

The surgical procedure of reverse shoulder replacement usually lasts for 2 to 3 hours. After the surgery, our medical team will give you a dose of antibiotics to prevent infection and painkiller medications to keep you comfortable.

Some patients can walk back home the same day after surgery, while some may need to stay overnight. You will be able to resume your normal activities within a few weeks. Our orthopedist will recommend physiotherapy or strengthening exercises to enhance the mobility and functioning of your new joint.
